A good Groningen week does not need seven nights out. This week’s options include a free cycling workshop, a new exhibition, experimental live music and a museum night that runs past midnight.
The selection below prioritises clear dates, published prices and activities that newcomers can investigate without relying on a private group chat. All times are local to the Netherlands. Listings were checked on 14 September; tickets and registration places can change.
Wednesday, 16 September: try a different kind of live show
VERA hosts Katya Shirshkova and Tomáš Niesner on Wednesday, with doors at 20:00 and the performance starting at 20:30. The advertised ticket price is €10.
Shirshkova’s work combines voice and looping, while Niesner works with guitar and electronics. This is a choice for listeners interested in experimental sound rather than a familiar singalong. VERA’s event page provides the programme and booking link.
The venue is at Oosterstraat 44. Listen to a sample of the artists’ work before buying, and arrange to meet before the performance: catching up with friends can wait until you are outside the listening space.
Friday, 18 September: three acts at VERA
Plus Instruments, Desinteresse and Hondenfokker share Friday’s programme. Doors open at 20:00, the show starts at 20:30 and the advertised ticket is €12. Expect an electronic and experimental programme; the venue’s descriptions are a better guide than assuming all three acts sound alike. Friday’s official listing.
For a student budget, compare the complete evening with the ticket price: food, drinks and the journey home still count. VERA states that it does not charge an additional online ticket fee. Its ticket information also explains how to retrieve a missing confirmation.
Saturday morning, 19 September: make cycling less intimidating
IWCN and The Social Hub are organising a free FietsFriend workshop. Walk-in is 10:15–10:30, followed by a road-rules presentation until 11:30 and practical activities until 12:30.
Registration is compulsory, even though participation is free. Bring your own bike for the road-rules practice and outing. A limited number of bikes may be available for beginners by prior arrangement; beginner instruction depends on sufficient volunteers and bikes. Register and read the full workshop conditions.
This is a useful option if you can ride but still hesitate at unfamiliar junctions. Check the meeting instructions in your confirmation: the organisation’s office address in a website footer should not be mistaken for the event meeting point.
Saturday evening: Groninger Museumnacht
The tenth Groninger Museumnacht takes place on 19 September, from 19:00 to 01:00, with a regular ticket listed at €15. Participating organisations include the Groninger Museum, Museum aan de A, Forum, Storyworld, Synagoge Groningen, the University Museum and Noorderlicht. Forum’s official event page provides programme information and the ticket link.
THEA at Niemeyer is also confirmed as a stop for Thinking Hands. Use Paterswoldseweg 43 for that visit. Niemeyer’s Museumnacht listing.
Choose two or three priorities before setting off. Treat the published evening hours as the overall window, not a promise that every performance runs continuously. Check individual activity times, language and access arrangements, and leave space for queues and travel between venues.
Saturday late: a heavier alternative
For grindcore and powerviolence, Suffering Quota and Trading Hands play VERA Downstage. Doors open at 22:30, the show starts at 23:00 and admission is €5. The listing specifies free entry with the VERA Clubcard. Official show details.
This overlaps with Museumnacht. Choose your priority rather than buying two tickets and assuming you can experience both in full. Bring hearing protection and establish a sensible route home.
A free daytime option, including Sunday
Thinking Hands at THEA has regular opening hours of 12:00–18:00, Wednesday through Sunday, and free admission for students carrying valid student ID. This gives you an option on 16–20 September without a paid evening ticket. Exhibition details.
One listing not to treat as a walk-in plan
VERA’s Tuesday, 15 September screening of Battleship Potemkin with a live soundtrack by Hiverne was marked sold out when checked. Do not travel expecting a door ticket simply because the event still appears in the calendar. Check VERA’s current programme.
For the lowest-spend weekend, combine Saturday’s free cycling workshop with a daytime student visit to THEA. If you want one paid cultural evening, Museumnacht is the broader option; if you want a focused live show, choose the VERA programme that actually interests you. The best plan is the one you can enjoy without borrowing from next week’s groceries.
